MUTE protects your privacy by avoiding direct connections with your sharing partners in the network. Most other file sharing programs use direct connections to download or upload, making your identity available to spies from the RIAA and other unscrupulous organizations.

Ants display collectively intelligent behavior when foraging for food or fighting off predators. Each ant in the colony acts in a rather simple way, but together they end up doing something clever, like discovering the shortest path between their ant hill and a food source. MUTE's routing mechanism is inspired by ant behavior.

MUTE is based on research, and experiments show that it works quite well. MUTE's ant-inspired routing is light-weight, robust, and adaptive. Results from experiments in real MUTE networks show that the collective behavior of MUTE nodes quickly finds the shortest (or fastest) routing path between two nodes on the network.

"The RIAA just started bullying Internet users, but they've been bullying musicians for decades. By refusing to pay for major label (RIAA) music, we can usher in a more fair music business and keep the Internet free (as in freedom)."

How to Report Bugs

Please understand that hundreds of new people download and try MUTE each day. If you find a bug and would like to see it fixed, you must follow these instructions carefully.

First, make sure you are using the latest version of MUTE.

There are two types of bugs: crashes (including freezes) and misbehaviors. Please refer to the appropriate section below.

Crashes

If the crash or freeze you have discovered can be triggered over and over by the same series of specific actions, then you should send me a bug report. An example series of actions might be: "I enter a question mark in the search field and then hit the search button." In this case, your bug report must include:
  • Subject line starting with "MUTE bug:"
  • What platform you are on
  • What specific series of actions triggers the crash or freeze
  • What happened as a result(it crashed, it froze, etc.)
If the crash seems to be "random" in that it does not happen every time you carry out a particular series of actions, please do not send a bug report unless you have located the specific problem in the source code and have found a fix for it. In that case, your bug report must include:
  • What platform you are on
  • A brief explanation of the problems you found in the source
  • Attached source files for each change you had to make to fix the crash

Misbehaviors

If MUTE behaves in a strange way but does not crash, and you can trigger this strange behavior over and over with a specific series of actions, you should send me a bug report that includes:
  • Subject line starting with "MUTE bug:"
  • What platform you are on
  • What specific series of actions triggers the strange behavior
  • A description of the strange behavior
  • An attached screen shot, if appropriate

Where to send reports

If you have followed the above instructions closely, then your bug report will be very helpful toward my goal of improving MUTE. Please send your report to me (Jason Rohrer) by email.
